House of Representatives Kicks Off Women’s History Month with Legislation to Place Women’s Suffrage National Monument on the National Mall

Press Release | March 1, 2023

Bipartisan Congressional Leaders Rally Together in Support of the "Women's Suffrage National Monument Location Act"

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives marked the first day of Women’s History Month with the introduction of  the “Women’s Suffrage National Monument Location Act,” historic bipartisan legislation that authorizes the congressionally chartered Women’s Suffrage National Monument to be placed on the National Mall. Led by Congressman Joe Neguse (D-CO) and Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (R-AZ), the legislation will ensure that the 36 million annual visitors to our Nation’s Capital experience a deeper and more complete American history.

“The National Mall receives more visitors each year than Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Grand Canyon National Parks combined,” said Anna Laymon, Executive Director of the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation. “It is the most visited National Park in the United States. And yet, there are no monuments or memorials on the National Mall dedicated to American women's history. With the passage of this legislation, the great women leaders of American history will finally take their place in the monumental core of our nation's most important commemorative space.”

“During my first term in Congress, we successfully enacted legislation to create Washington D.C.’s first outdoor monument honoring the women’s suffrage movement. Today, I’m excited to join my colleagues as we kickstart the next phase of this critical project." said Congressman Neguse.

Added Congresswoman Lesko, “In 1920, just 103 years ago, our Nation ratified the 19th Amendment and finally granted women the right to vote. I am proud to join my colleagues on this important, bipartisan legislation to commemorate the remarkable women who fought for women’s suffrage. We must ensure that these women are properly honored on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. alongside other Americans who fought for freedom and helped shape our great nation.”

SUPPORT
Amongst our most iconic monuments and memorials, American women’s stories are missing. Today, fewer than 5% of statues in our Nation’s Capital depict women. And we need your support. Like most monuments and memorials in Washington, D.C., the Women's Suffrage National Monument will be funded in its entirety through private donations.
